The 2017 Spring and Summer Concerts at Eccles Town Hall were again well              attended  and attracted new members to the choir.

In April we performed in St Michael’s Bramhall to raise funds for the Youth Centre, The       Mill.

In June we had a most pleasant day out in Chester followed by an evening concert in St  Chad’s Parish Church, Hanmer, Clywd. The concert was preceded by a sumptuous afternoon tea hosted by Elizabeth, Lady Hanmer, and the church was packed.   We also performed in St James’, Salford.

In  August 2017 we sang at a lovely wedding in Prestbury Parish Church, Cheshire and at the funeral of one of our dear former members Agnes McGrath.

November 17th – 21st 2016 members of the choir sang in a massed international choirs performance of Howard Goodall’s ‘Eternal Light’ in the Carnegie Hall, New York! (Presented by Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY).)

SUMMER 2016 TRIP TO LÜNEN   August 18th – 22nd . The Golden Jubilee of Salford’s town twinning with Lünen. Another fantastic experience with civic reception and performances in Cologne Cathedral and other churches in the area. The Jubilee concert was attended by the mayor and was performed to a packed church.

The Summer Concert was better attended than ever and met with very pleasing comments.

On Saturday 25th June the choir performed an hour long concert at St Peter’s Church, Swinton to celebrate the visit of dignitaries from Salford’s twin towns in Germany and France. It was poignant that the concert was 2 days following the referendum. ‘Bridge over troubled Water’ was an apt closing piece.

Friday July 15th 2016 Summer concert was a huge success with a very warm audience. (The cake stall is a great hit with everyone!) More new pieces…excerpts from ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Bridge over troubled Water’.

Friday April 15th 2016 Spring concert had yet again an increase in audience attendance. We aired some new pieces which went down well especially ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Lullaby of Birdland’.

Friday 4th December 2015, our Christmas concert at ECCLES TOWN HALL was the best attended yet and was a resounding success.

On Sunday October 11th 2015 we hosted a group of visitors from Lünen with a magnificent buffet supper and concert. The choir had met several of the visitors in Germany and look forward to renewing acquaintance next year. There are plans to twin with the Gospel Choir of Lünen.

16th September ’15 we sang in a concert with a student choir from the Czech Republic. They were fantastic – young, talented, enthusiastic. Eccles Community Choir took the stage immediately after the Czech choir had treated us to their show-stoppers as a taster but…………..nothing daunted, they performed brilliantly.

EXCITING TRIP 2015  to Lünen, Salford’s twin town in Germany.                                                     Check out NEWS page for newspaper report.

Eccles Community Choir started out as Eccles Singers in 2003 when it was part of Eccles College’s Adult Provision. In September 2010, after amalgamation into Salford City College, that provision ceased and the choir became independently run and is now based at Branwood Primary School.

It meets every Tuesday evening 7.15 – 9.15  and is open to all regardless of age or musical ability at a cost of £35 per 10+ week term. There are no auditions.

The classes include technique for improved breathing and voice production, learning new pieces from baroque to modern pop, refreshing older repertoire, much laughter and making new friendships. We also enjoy meals out together.

In 2007 we were privileged to work for a week with members of the BBC Philharmonic, cellist Matthew Barley and conductor Charles Hazelwood to produce a BBC Radio 3 broadcast in the Discovering Music series.

In 2009 the choir became part of the Salford Family Orchestra and Chorus which produced a piece of music which was performed at the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall and which was broadcast on Radio 3.

In 2010 the choir entered the Buxton Festival of Music and was awarded first prize against some very classy opposition!

In 2012 Salford Family Orchestra and Chorus performed its composition for Her Majesty the Queen when she opened Media City, Salford.

In May 2012 the choir won First Prize in the Chester Festival of Music. Two out of two!

In August 2015 the choir visited Salford’s twin town, Lünen, in North Germany. Highlights were  performances in Cologne Cathedral, Münster’s St Lamberti, a gala concert in St Georgskirche and participation in the morning service in the  Christuskirche, Horstmar. We’ve been invited back!

Angela has been Musical Director since the choir’s inception. Our regular pianist is John Stott.

Harmony ’96

Harmony ’96  is an ad hoc choir which  meets twice a year to sing major oratorio works. It began in 1996 as part of the Bramhall Christian Music Festival with Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”. Since then, the choir has performed “Messiah”, Mozart’s Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem, Haydn’s “Creation” and “Nelson Mass”, Vivaldi’s “Gloria”and Karl Jenkins’ “The armed Man” (some of these have been performed several times!). “Elijah” was performed on the choir’s 5th, 10th, and 20th anniversaries.

Proceeds from the choir’s performances have sponsored students at Kolweny Kingsway High School, Nyandiwa, Kenya through  Rowley Projects  but latterly they have sponsored two students through university on the ‘Hope Beyond Form 4′ Scholarship Scheme.

Upcoming concerts

Messiah 2018 – Good Friday, March 30th 7.00 at Bramhall Baptist Church.  Our annual performance of this wonderful work. One rehearsal  Friday 16th at 7.00. Simply email if you would like to sing.

September 2018  Probably a Vivaldi/baroque concert.

*************************

Saturday September 30th 7.30 at Bramhall Baptist Church  Haydn’s Creation.  The choir of 58 singers sang beautifully as did the soloists and it was a very special evening which should have been shared with more audience. The event nonetheless raised £1,000+ thanks to choir members’ generosity.

Saturday September 23rd, 7.30, Bramhall Baptist Church, Mendelssohn’s Elijah. This concert was well attended and very much enjoyed by choir and audience alike.

Messiah – Good Friday, March 25th 2016 at Bramhall Baptist Church was a very special occasion – our 20th anniversary. The 84 strong choir was accompanied by The Athenean Ensemble, leader Brigid Rawling,  with ten stringed instruments, harpsichord and trumpet! A superb amount of £1,500 was raised for Rowley Projects.

On November 28th 2015 66 singers performed Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine accompanied by John Stott on organ and  Beethoven’s 9th with Hazel Grove Orchestra conducted by Mehrdad Bakhshayesh. Soloists, Angela Rowley, Marjorie Seddon, John Elliot and David Borsada. The Cantique was exquisite and although  the Beethoven was a challenge, the challenge was met in style!
